Some people claim that stereotypes can be harmful towards certain race, group, culture or religion. They argue that stereotypes can have lasting negative effects. People tend to easily generalize what they see in the media. Which can have a big impact in the creation of stereotype. Muslims are a very diverse group. The Muslim populations includes people of almost every ethnicity, race and country. The Muslim community in America consist of inborn Americans and immigrants. Although the Muslim community in America is widely viewed as immigrants, the majority of Muslims in America are born in the United states of America.
The Islamic extremist attacks in Syria, Paris and San Bernardino, Calif. have increased anti-muslim hostility and islamophobia. And matters have been made worse, with the recent headlines about the presidential campaign targeting Muslim immigrants. These generalizations and false perceptions by the American community about the Muslim community can be referred as stereotypes.
As people watch the news and media focusing primarily on radical individuals, they tend to apply it to all Muslims, Which then creates generalization and stereotyping about the Muslims. These stereotypes tend to create a climate of fear in America, which then can affect the Muslim community not only in the US, but also outside of the country. A great example would be attitudes towards the Syrian refugees. Many refugees are migrating or fleeing because of the violence and civil war happening in the middle east and the northern part of Africa. In addition, some refugees are being displaced by the Islamic state ISIS. But because of the stereotypes about the Muslim communities Syrian refugees have a hard time entering the United States. Even after entering the US and other countries Syrians, are often unable to access even the most basic services.
Another group greatly affected by stereotypes are the African Americans. Stereotypes and generalizations about African Americans and their culture have evolved within American society. The perception about African Americans have been closely tied to their place in the social strata of the United States. Different Researches done around race relationship and stereotypes show the negative impact stereotype has on African Americans. For instance, A 2000 study out of Emory University found that at a hospital emergency department in Atlanta, 74 percent of white patients with bone fractures received painkillers compared with 50 percent of black patients. Similarly, A research done last year found that black children with appendicitis were less likely to receive pain medication than their white counterparts. This shows the impact stereotypes have on African Americans, and how they are routinely undertreated for their pain compared with whites. The harm stereotypes have on this minority group is getting more of an attention now a days, as the media and the public have been bringing emphasis to the brutal mistreatment of African Americans by the police force. The attention the media land the public created helped increase the voice of movements like Black lives matter and Black girl magic.
